July News

July has been great fun so far!  I began the month on the Island of Gigha, returning from the Music Festival, and a collaborative gig with Laura-Beth Salter, Ross Ainslie, Ali Hutton and Andrea Gobbi.  We had an amazing time, the gig was so much fun, and we even got the chance to take this fab pedalo out in the bay!

We put together a version of one of Ross’ tunes, and worked with photographer / videographer Graeme MacDonald in Glasgow to record it!  Follow us all on Facebook to keep up to date with that one.

Laura-Beth and I have also been upto The Ceilidh Place in Ullapool and Lyth Arts Centre – two absolutely brilliant venues.  It was great to get out and about up north, although it was pretty roasting in the car!  Here’s a picture of Ullapool the morning after our gig – what a stunning setting!

After that, I headed down to Folk at the Hall in Trelwynd, North Wales with fab fiddler Ryan Young.  Here’s a clip of our gig:

Kinnaris Quintet has their debut album ‘Free One’ coming out later this summer, which is incredibly exciting.  Somhairle MacDonald has been working on the artwork, and we had a band photoshoot earlier this month.  While he had the studio booked, I managed to squeeze in for some solo shots too.  Here’s one of his photos – he did a fantastic job capturing the energy of playing an instrument!  Can’t wait to see the band shots too!

Last weekend, Laura-Beth and I headed to Ulverston for the 20th Furness Tradition Festival 2018.  We shared the stage with some fabulous acts including The Rachel Hamer Band, Bernard Wrigley, Bridget Marsden & Leif Ottosson and Chris Meredith & James Taylor.  I had the pleasure of visiting Ulverston a few years ago with the Rachel Hair Trio, so it was great to be back again.

There are lots of great events still to happen this month – tomorrow I’m in Bar Bloc in Glasgow with my Kinnaris Quintet buddy Aileen Gobbi.  Then, I’m teaching on the Ayrshire Traditional Music Summer School with Adam Sutherland and Emma Tomlinson.

I have my first Kinnaris Quintet gig of the summer this Friday up at Hebridean Celtic Festival in Stornoway, before catching up with Ross Ainslie & Ali Hutton, then travelling to Campbeltown for Ceol Campbeltown with Ryan Young.  I finish July with a gig at The Star Folk Club in Glasgow with Laura-Beth.

Lots going on!

August has some great events too, including Kinnaris Quintet & Brighde Chaimbeul at Cambridge Folk Festival, Kinnaris Quintet & Ryan Young at Sidmouth Folk Week, a trip to Ventnor Fringe Festival on Isle of Wight with Ryan, a gig at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and a trip to Normandy with Ryan, glamping with Laura-Beth at Purbeck Valley Folk Festival and getting stuck into planning next academic year at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland!
